| SNOW
LEOPARD - DISTRIBUTION |
|
The Snow Leopard is found today mainly
in the mountains of Central Asia. It is found in the following countries: Russia,
Mongolia, Tibet, China, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Some idea of how poorly known this species is in the wild can be gained from the
wide variation in the different estimates given for its total population. One
report stated that it was nearly extinct, with only 400 animals remaining alive.
Another survey put the figure at between 3,000 and 10,000, while a third estimated
the world population as high as 40,000. |
 |
|
| Bearing in mind the animal's remote Himalayan
habitat, it is doubtful if we will ever be certain of the true figure. In addition
to the wild population, there are over 370 Snow Leopards in captivity in zoos
around the world, where breeding successes are improving. |
